In Addis Ababa, the workshop will be centred on Merkato, the huge outdoor market in the heart of the city, where traditional products and activities compete with contemporary commercial organizations. Given its centrality, Merkato is also under real estate pressure. The analysis of this unique functional, economic, and cultural mix allows to assess the validity of a number of  Western assumptions about cities. It also can help to better understand the consequences agricultural crises originated by climate change can have on food supply and social and economic life of many cities in the world. The workshop is organized in collaboration with EiAB, University of Addis Ababa and other African universities and research centres.
